There are huge benefits from purchasing an electric car. However it is important to bear in mind that an electric car may not be suitable for everyone, and individual circumstances need to be taken into account. Take into account the following when buying a used electric car;

1. Manufacturer's warranties- most electric car manufacturers offer an extended battery warranty. These can typically be up to 10 years or 100,000 miles. As the largest expense of electric car can come from the battery, it is important to check the status of such warranties and ensure that the paperwork is all up to date.

2. Electric Charging- Fundamentally electric cars need to be charged, thus charging points will be required. Look at the charge map and see what charging points are available. Also consider a domestic charging point and research the various types of charging points. Many electric cars will come with charging leads, it is important that you check the leads work and they are compatible with your electricity supply at home. Consider installing a charging point, which can be subsidised up to 75% by the Government home charging scheme.

3. Range- The range of the vehicle also needs to be taken into account. It may be worth logging how many miles you tend to travel on your regular journeys. For electric cars the word ‘range’ and ‘range anxiety’ are often mentioned, if you are considering an electric vehicle you should already be confident that the range of the vehicle will meet your requirements. However it is often worth noting that the manufacturers range, more than likely will be different from that of the ‘real world range’ of the vehicle you are looking at. The range of an EV is dependent on many variables including its age, driving style, temperature and many other aspects. As with all batteries EV batteries loose some capacity with age. When you look to buy a used electric car you should check whether the vehicle is fully charged and then how much range the vehicle says it has. We would then recommend you do a 5 to 10 mile test drive using your normal driving style and see how it affects the range of the vehicle.

4. Additional benefits and schemes- to help promote the uptake of electric vehicles many eco car manufacturers offer additional benefits, these can include free recovery if you run out of charge, or the use of additional vehicles if you need to make a trip that exceeds the range of your EV.

5. Servicing- electric car servicing is different to that of conventional combustion engine vehicles and it may be worth checking whether your local mechanics can work on EV’s. Second hand electric cars bought from a dealership would have received a high level of checks and servicing.

We estimate there are approximately 8,000 to 10,000 electric cars registered in the UK. The uptake of EV’s has been aided by the government’s plug-in car grant that was launched in 2011 by the Office for Low Emission Vehicles. Home charging is the most convenient way of recharging your EV battery cell, overnight tends to be the most common time to charge your electric car. Most EV’s will fully recharge between 4 and 8 hours depending on the battery size and the type of charging pod. More and more public charging points are becoming available; also more workplaces are offering EV charging points. Charging while at work or out and about is also becoming more popular. Public EV networks and schemes are becoming more widespread and there are a growing number of points to charge available. However it is worth considering that when planning a long journey you will need to take into account where you are going to stop and how you’re going to charge. 4.Maintenance and running costs of electric vehicles will be less than that of conventional cars due to EV’s having far fewer moving parts.

5.Most importantly you will be benefiting the environment by reducing your CO 2 emissions and carbon footprint and pollution.

Although typically more expensive to buy, and EV can be considered an investment as there are significant returns.
