Mazda launch initial details of its all-new 2 supermini

Mazda has released details of its smart-looking supermini which the Japanese company hopes will prove a real challenger to the established class-favourite, the Ford Fiesta. Indeed, the company hopes that its ‘Soul of Motion’ design – or KODO – will appeal to the European masses and build on the success the company is enjoying with the CX-5, Mazda6 and recently-launched Mazda3.

At this stage, detailed information is sparse from Mazda. What we do know for certain is that there will be a 1.5-litre SKYACTIVE-D diesel engine and a 1.5-litre SKYACTIV-G petrol engine. There will be a range of power outputs – and there may even be a 200bhp petrol variant that will start to take the battle to the Ford Fiesta ST. There will be a choice of manual or automatic transmissions.

Safety and technology will feature large in the new Mazda2 and we are told by the company that it will feature two ‘class beating’ safety technologies that will help you from redesigning your precious bodywork.

The MZD Connect system means that driver’s will be able to avoid hours of fiddling to change the radio station.

The early interior shot seems to show a spacious and uncluttered environment.

The new Mazda2 goes on sale first in its home market of Japan in the autumn, and will not be coming to Europe until early next year.
