Mitsubishi hints at Outlander PHEV Concept-S

Mitsubishi have provided us with a tantalising glimpse into what will be the company’s Outlander PHEV Concept-S, which is due to be unveiled at next month’s Paris motor show. Mitsubishi describe the Concept S as a “model MMC proposes as a special package of the Outlander PHEV production model that has refined interior and exterior design that magnifies the Outlander PHEV’s unique driving experience”. No, we aren’t sure what this disjointed statement means either.

What we do know is that the Concept-S is a smarter adaptation of Mitsubishi’s existing Outlander plug-in hybrid, which was first shown at the 2012 Paris show. The main changes up front include the addition of an enlarged central air intake. Also featuring are distinctive C-shaped accents that run alongside the headlamps and down towards the front wheel arches. This is echoed at the back via the redesigned tail lights.

Like the current Outlander PHEV, the Concept-S is expected to mate a 2.0-litre turbocharged petrol engine to a pair of electric motors that produces a combined 204bhp. Power will be sent to all four wheels. Theoretically, it will be capable of returning 148mpg on the combined cycle and emit just 44g/km of CO2. Not too bad when you consider that it will be able to polish off the 0-62mph sprint in around 11.0 seconds before going on to top out at 106mph.

The existing model ranges from £28,249 and onto £34,999, after the £5,000 government grant has been taken into account.

At the same time as releasing the two teaser images you see reproduced here, the company statement says that “the Outlander PHEV Concept-S takes ‘Sporty and Sophisticated’ as the theme for its design. This refined design expresses the unique combination of spirited 4x4 performance from its twin-motor PHEV system, soothing silent running and superior on-road performance.”
